Raid nets more than $14,000 in illegal pills
By Greg Bird
A search for stolen property turned up more than officers expected last Wednesday night as they found over $10,000 worth of illegal narcotics in a Pine Knot home.
Officers from the McCreary County Sheriff’s Department, the Kentucky State Police and Constables Milford Creekmore and Brad Waters entered the Bob Musgrove Road home of Luther “Doc” Moore around 9:00 p.m. Wednesday night after receiving information about the possibility of stolen property being in the home.
After first entering the home, officers discovered a large quantity of pills and cash in the home. Since the narcotics were not on the initial search warrant, the officers suspended their search until a new warrant could be obtained to include the illegal substances.
Once the new warrant was secured, the officers resumed their search, turning up a large quantity of illegal narcotics, weapons and more than $1,600 in cash.
A total of 121 80 mg. Oxycontin tablets were found in various pill bottles around the home, along with more than seven 40 mg. pills. Authorities also confiscated Oxycodone and Hydrocodone tablets.
According to the officers, the 80 mg Oxycontin tablets have a street value of $120 per pill.
Moore, and the three other individuals in the home at the time of the raid, identified as James Murphy, Tammy Perkins and Wayne Cross, were not arrested, but will face several charges.
The evidence will be presented to the McCreary County Grand Jury to seek indictments against the suspects.
Trial rescheduled in World Finance case
Voice Staff Report
A trial initially scheduled this week for three women accused on embezzling thousands of dollars from their employer has been rescheduled for later this year.
Nancy Hill, Melissa Strunk and Misty Coffey were to appear before McCreary County Circuit Court Judge Jerry Winchester and a jury Tuesday morning to begin trial in the case that accused the three of embezzling nearly $200,000 from World Finance Corporation. The trial did not occur Tuesday morning and was rescheduled for October 24. Officials in the McCreary County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office said the three should stand trial together.
The three women were indicted by a grand jury last September and jointly face 344 counts on charges of theft of identity, forgery and theft by deception. According to information released by the Kentucky State Police at the time of the indictment, the three women carried out illegal activity for nearly 18 months while employed by World Finance Corporation in Whitley City.
According to KSP Detective Billy Correll, the three, acting at various times together and sometimes individually, would use the personal information of other individuals to allegedly obtain loans for financial benefit. The loan scam was uncovered by representatives of World Finance Corporation while performing an internal audit. Correll and the KSP investigated the case.
Hill, 44, faces 87 counts in the case on various charges of theft of identity, second-degree forgery and theft by deception. She is accused of embezzling more than $55,000. Strunk faces 74 counts on the same charges and is accused of fraudulently acquiring $36,000. Coffey faces a total of 210 counts on the charges and is accused of obtaining over $103,000 in the scheme. In all, World Finance Corporation representatives said the company lost more than $195,000.
Make plans for Saturday
By Andrew Powell
Those involved with local tourism efforts are looking to a new promotion to attract visitors from the local region.
In recent months, Tracey Skinner and Dwight Bassett have propelled an idea, which was supported by the McCreary County Tourist Commission, for a “First Saturday” event each month. The idea is to have any and all local events planned for a given month, held on the first Saturday in that month. The plan has spun from local events already planned on that particular date such as the Klassic Kruize, Crafters Day at the 4-H Mountain Crafts Center and the horse show at the Horseman’s Association Arena in Strunk.
“When looking at what was already happening on this day each month, we had the idea to try to fill the entire day with events so we can hopefully get more people to visit from surrounding communities,” Skinner said.
Bassett said it is a plan that could work for McCreary County, especially with high fuel prices and regional families looking for things to do on the weekend without traveling a great distance.
“A lot of families are cutting back on their vacations, so this will give people in our region the chance to come to a neighboring county and have something to do,” Bassett said.
“There are a lot of good things going on here, people just have to get out and experience it,” Skinner added.
Bassett and Skinner, now being backed by the Tourist Commission, are asking fellow McCreary Countians to host “anything and everything” on the first Saturday of the month.
The organization is working with the staff of Whitley City Americana radio station WHAY 98.3 FM to coordinate and promote events. Local newspapers are also being asked to help promote events.
Adam Phillips, program director at WHAY, said the radio station has established an area events link on their website at www.hay98.com where “First Saturday,” as well as other local events, are listed. Events can be submitted to Phillips through the website or by calling (606) 376-2218. Media outlets have established guidelines for promotion of the “First Saturday” events, including listing events free of charge only for non-profit organizations such as those involved in church, school or civic activity. Events should also be submitted two weeks prior to the “First Saturday” in order to achieve timeliness of publication.
Bassett and Skinner hope as the idea is brought into full development, a wide range of events will be scheduled to give anyone visiting the area a full day of activity in McCreary County, whether that activity is car shows, music or yard sales.
Bassett added, “We just need to promote what is going on so people know they can get away for the day.”
Events scheduled for Saturday, July 1 include:
Crafters Day at 4-H Mountain Crafts Center (Hwy. 90 in Parkers Lake) Open 10 a.m. till 5 p.m.
Old Fashioned Gospel Singing (Whitley City Church of God) Beginning at 1 p.m.

Oneida man killed in accident
By Greg Bird
An Oneida man died Friday afternoon when the vehicle he was driving rolled down an embankment following a collision.
Hollis Phillips, 61 of Oneida, died as a result of his injuries at Scott County Hospital Friday evening. Phillips’ passenger, Joan Sexton, was transported to Scott County Hospital for treatment of her injuries and has since been released.
According to the McCreary County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Tom Smith, Homer Thomas of Stearns, was attempting to cross U.S. 27 at approximately 3:00 p.m. in a Dodge Ram pickup from Pig Skin Road. As Thomas pulled out his vehicle struck the rear driver’s side of Phillips’ truck, which was traveling southbound on U.S. 27, causing it to spin across the roadway before rolling over down the embankment on the west side of the road.
Members of the Whitley City Fire Department and McCreary County EMS tended to Phillips’ injuries at the scene before loading him in an ambulance for transport to a waiting medical evacuation helicopter. Phillips’ condition quickly worsened so he was taken to the hospital in the ambulance.
