Officers arrest armed robbery suspect
By Greg Bird

A brazen Sunday afternoon robbery attempt will send a local man back to jail, just a few days after being released on bond for other charges.

Around 2:30 p.m. Kentucky State Police Post 11 in London received a call concerning an armed robbery at Marshes Corner Market in Marshes Siding.

Trooper Charles Senters arrived and began the investigation. After interviewing the clerk on duty at the time of the robbery it was determined that a male subject, wearing a green ski mask and armed with a handgun entered the store and demanded money.

The subject took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the store. The clerk was not physically harmed in the incident.

Trooper Senters and McCreary County Sheriff’s Deputy Jimmy Meadows, assisted by community watch members, began searching the area for the suspect.

Their investigations led them to identify a possible suspect in the robbery and at approximately 4:00 p.m. the officers picked up Tommy J. Hughes, 24, of Whitley City outside of the Cobblestone Trailer Park and brought him in for questioning.

Several witnesses saw the alleged robber flee the store at the time of the robbery and run across Highway 1651 toward the railroad tracks and head south, following the tracks. After the witnesses provided officers with a positive identification of Hughes, as well as confirmation from the clerk, Trooper Senters formally charged Hughes with First Degree Robbery. He was taken to the McCreary County Jail where he is awaiting a hearing.
Hughes had just been released from custody last Wednesday after posting bond on separate charges. Hughes was indicted in February with two counts of Third Degree Rape. He pled guilty to those charges and was awaiting sentencing, with the hearing scheduled for August. Hughes was also on probation from a 2006 charge of Theft By Unlawful Taking and Second Degree Burglary. Hughes had pled guilty to those charges and received a five-year probated sentence.

Trooper Craig Reed and Sheriff Gus Skinner assisted with the questioning. Trooper Senters is continuing the investigation.

Stabbing leads to arrest
Voice Staff Report

Two people were injured after being stabbed as a result of an apparent argument Tuesday afternoon. The suspect in the assault, identified as Karen Vanover, fled the scene but was apprehended and arrested a short time later.
The stabbing occurred around 12:30 p.m. at the One Stop Chevron in North Whitley City.

According to Trooper Shaler Jones, who is investigating the incident, the fight may have started over a dispute concerning a dog.

Tony Ridener and Roxanne Coffey had apparently stopped at the convenience store shortly after noon on Tuesday when they were confronted by Vanover in the parking lot.

Vanover allegedly took out a knife and began slashing at the two victims before grabbing the dog and leaving the scene.

Ridener suffered at least one deep knife wound to the arm and was bleeding profusely when EMT’s arrived on the scene and began treatment. Ridener was transported to Scott County Hospital for evaluation. Coffey had several smaller lacerations to the arm, chest and face from the stabbing.

A short time after officers began their investigation, Vanover was spotted by passersby in a vehicle on the side of the road about one mile past the 4-H Camp on Sandhill Road.

Officers rushed to the scene and arrested Vanover, charging her with two counts of Assault. Further charges may be pending as the investigation continues.

Trooper Craig Reed, Deputy Chris King, Constable Jamie Higgenbotham and Deputy Jailer Tim Barnett assisted at the scene.
